Empowering Tutors for the Future: Navigating GAI to Elevate Student Writing

Maria Partida, Laredo College

abstract

Recent studies highlight the transformative role of generative AI (GAI) in writing education. This lesson plan equips writing tutors with strategies to effectively integrate AI into tutoring sessions. Objectives include familiarizing tutors with AI resources to enhance their practices, addressing ethical considerations in using AI tools with students, and applying GAI constructively throughout the writing process. By leveraging AI technologies responsibly, tutors can support dynamic, efficient, and personalized student learning experiences. This approach ensures tutors are prepared to adapt to evolving educational technologies while upholding ethical standards. Ultimately, the lesson plan fosters a robust framework for integrating AI tools into tutoring, enhancing instructional support and meeting the demands of modern education.

LESSON OVERVIEW

Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) resources play a significant role in simplifying the academic writing process, increasing productivity, and enhancing overall work efficiency (Khalifa & Albadawy, 2024). Tutors trained in GAI can leverage these tools to offer more targeted and effective support, thereby improving the overall quality of writing instruction. Therefore, the purpose of this lesson plan is to explore the integration of GAI tools in writing center pedagogy. This integration aims to enhance writing tutors’ writing and research skills, foster critical thinking, and prepare them for the evolving digital landscape.

This lesson plan is grounded in contemporary scholarship and theories of writing pedagogy and digital literacy. Research indicates that GAI can augment traditional teaching methods, fostering a collaborative and interactive learning environment (Parker et al., 2024). Furthermore, recent studies highlight the potential of GAI to transform writing education. AI-driven tools, such as intelligent tutoring systems (ITS), can provide individualized feedback and adaptive instruction, which are essential for developing strong writing skills in today’s education context (Banawan et al., 2023). Moreover, GAI can help tutors manage the cognitive load associated with providing detailed feedback, allowing them to focus on higher-order concerns such as argumentation and coherence (Huang et al., 2022). This approach not only enhances the efficiency of tutoring sessions but also ensures that students receive comprehensive and specialized support tailored to their individual needs. Lastly, training writing tutors to use GAI responsibly is also essential to address ethical concerns, such as academic integrity and bias in AI-generated feedback. Educators must be equipped to guide students in understanding the limitations and appropriate use of AI tools, ensuring that these technologies are used to complement, rather than replace, an individual’s judgment and creativity (Gayed et al., 2022).

Through this lesson plan, writing tutors will a) be equipped with knowledge and skills to integrate GAI tools/resources into their sessions in order to supplement their instruction, b) develop strategies for discussing the ethical and effective use of GAI with student writers, and c) receive guidance in constructive applications of AI throughout the writing process in writing tutoring related aspects. Facilitators are encouraged to incorporate any type of hardware and software as best meets their needs for this lesson’s objectives. Moreover, during the activity, participants will be asked to analyze case scenarios on best practice for AI integration into writing tutoring sessions.
